Are processing rates the same online?
Processing online usually costs slightly more than processing in-person. Interchange rates are higher, and the greater risk of fraud and customer disputes can affect rates.
It's unfortunate, but there's simply more fraud in an online/keyed environment. When the card isn't physically present, it's harder for merchants to verify the legitimacy of any given transaction. As such, the card associations have higher underlying interchange rates for card-not-present (CNP) sales.

Because there are so many different interchange categories, it's not possible to give an across-the-board figure for rate increases. Typically, rates will be approximately 0.30% higher for CNP transactions. A few important notes:

-
For CNP sales, you must provide AVS information to get the lowest possible rates.
-
Regulated debit cards see no rate increases in a CNP environment.
-
You aren't able to process PIN-debit sales online, they'll be treated as signature-debit.
