Chargebacks
How do I avoid chargebacks?
Communication is king! Most disputes stem from an expectation breakdown between the consumer and merchant. Be clear and upfront about pricing and terms.
Advanced chargeback mitigation techniques
If your business inherently receives more chargebacks than normal, you may need to employ some advanced mitigation techniques. Let our industry experts review your needs.
Fighting a chargeback
When responding to a chargeback, it's imperative that you present your perspective favorably. Share receipts, customer communications, tracking data, and relevant information.
What's the chargeback process?
The response window is relatively short - between 10 and 14 days after the chargeback is filed. Make sure to respond quickly, and provide all requested documentation.
What's a retrieval?
Sometimes called a "mini chargeback", retrievals are a request for additional information on any given sale. Failure to respond to a retrieval will result in a chargeback.
Chargeback ratios, and keeping them low
The card associations do not like when merchants receive a high number of chargebacks. Ideally, you'll keep your chargeback count to less than 0.25% of your total sales.
How much do chargebacks cost?
Depending on your provider, chargebacks are typically between $20 - $30 per instance. If you lose a chargeback, you also lose the value of the original sale, too.
