What is a Payment Gateway?

A payment gateway is an electronic platform for payment acceptance. Gateways commonly allow for Virtual Terminal usage and shopping cart connections.

A gateway, otherwise known as a virtual terminal, is a digital way of accepting payments. Most gateways will have both an online terminal you can access from a computer, as well as a mobile processing solution you can download from your respective app store. A gateway will also allow you to connect to your website’s  shopping cart for online payments directly from your customer.

Additionally, gateways allow for upper level features, such as invoicingrecurring billing, and storing your customer's sensitive payment data. Some gateways can support level 2/3 processingACH payments, and surcharging

Good gateways will store your payment history, and have a simple user experience to make payment entry easy. In addition, gateways can also connect with third party systems like accounting software or CRMs. All AND accounts can access our free, built-in gateway which includes all upper-level features.
