What is a Merchant Service Provider?

The merchant service provider (or MSP) is responsible for processing credit card transactions on behalf of the merchant. They setup the account, provide support, equipment, and dispute representation.

An MSP, or Merchant Service Provider, partners with one or more acquiring banks  to provide credit and debit acceptance to businesses. The MSP’s role in your business' card acceptance is to be your voice and advocate to your customer's  card-issuing banks. If you have questions surrounding your credit or debit card processing you’ll reach out to your MSP. As your provider, the MSP also handles  chargeback resolution, and helps ensure that your account stays in compliance with the card-brands (Visa / MasterCard / Discover / American Express).

An MSP also provides services like terminal deployments, eCheck acceptance, and  point of sale assistance. Ultimately, your merchant service provider is who represents you! A good MSP will operate on your behalf for all payment processing issues, advocating for you in disputes and helping navigate any technical / financial issues you may encounter.
